Quick answers.

The things people ask first. If your question isn’t here, send us one.

About the app
Is Ledgerly available now?

Not on Google Play yet. Ledgerly is in active development, and early access is by direct APK install; see the next question for how that works. When the Play listing is live, the install link will be right here.

Get it first

One email when Ledgerly is on Google Play. Nothing else, ever.

Is it safe to install Ledgerly outside the Play Store?

Direct APK installs are how Android apps ship before a Play listing. Android will ask you to allow installs from your browser or Files app, and Play Protect may scan the file first. Only install an APK you received from us directly. The Play Store release will replace this flow at launch.

Is it free?

The free tier and a small Pro tier for advanced features are still being finalized TBD. We will publish the split here before launch.

The AI features work two ways. The original way is bring-your-own-key, and that stays free forever: you add your own OpenAI API key, calls go from your device to OpenAI, and you pay OpenAI for whatever you use, with no markup from us. New since July 2026, there is also an optional Ledgerly AI subscription (₹99/month) that runs the chat features, the summaries, Concierge, Roast, loan-reminder drafts, and goal price estimates, on our hosted service with no OpenAI account needed. Receipt and screenshot OCR still uses your own key for now. If you set up neither, every non-AI feature still works.

What is the Ledgerly AI subscription?

A monthly plan (₹99/month) bought on the subscribe page. You pay through Razorpay, get a personal access key on the spot, and paste it into the app under Settings, Ledgerly AI. Chat AI features then run through our hosted service, no OpenAI key homework, with fair-use daily limits. Cancel anytime; the key simply stops working when your subscription ends. Details in the terms and the refund policy.

Will it work on iPhone?

Android-only for now. Ledgerly leans on Android-specific APIs (SMS reading, accessibility services, notification access) that don’t exist on iOS in the same form.

Does it work offline?

Yes for every non-AI feature. Capture, the optimizer, the Cashback Bank, goals, alerts, and insights all run on your device with no network. The AI features and any feature that reaches the internet (OpenAI, INR Deals, link previews) need a connection, and you choose when they run.

Privacy and permissions
Does my data leave my phone?

By default, no. Bank SMS, captured order details, your ledger, balances, and forecasts all live on your device. A small set of optional features can send specific data off your phone, and they are all off until you turn them on. The full list is in the privacy policy.

Why does it need SMS access?

So Ledgerly can read the transaction SMS your bank already sends and turn each one into a clean ledger entry. Day to day it uses RECEIVE_SMS, which covers new messages from the moment you grant it. If you run the optional Import SMS history feature, Ledgerly also uses READ_SMS, for a one-time scan of your inbox that you start yourself: you pick how far back to look, you review every transaction it found before anything is saved, and you can remove the import afterwards. Either way, messages are parsed on your device and never uploaded.

Can it pick up spending from before I installed it?

Yes. The optional Import SMS history feature scans the bank messages already in your inbox. You choose how far back (30, 60, or 90 days, or everything), every transaction it finds lands in a preview grouped by month, duplicates of what Ledgerly already tracks are skipped, and nothing is saved until you confirm. The scan runs once, on your device, and an import can be removed afterwards in one tap.

What does the accessibility overlay actually read?

Only the order screens of the merchant apps it knows about (Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy, Instamart, Zomato, Amazon, Uber Eats, Flipkart, Shopsy, BigBasket, Myntra, Nykaa, AJIO, Dunzo, Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm). It reads only when you tap the capture button, and captured details stay on your device. One toggle disables it.

Can I use AI features without sharing my data?

By definition, no. AI features have to send context to a model to answer. That is why they are opt-in: they stay silent until you either add your own OpenAI key (calls go from your device to OpenAI) or activate a Ledgerly AI subscription (calls route through our hosted service, which meters usage but does not store what you send). Either way, what gets sent is summarized (monthly totals, top merchants, your card list, the question you typed), not your raw transaction list. If you set up neither, every non-AI feature still works.

What happens to my data if I uninstall?

It is removed with the app. Before you uninstall or switch phones, take a full backup from Settings, Data. Restoring that file on a fresh install brings everything back, and an Undo last restore option protects you if a restore goes wrong.

Can I export my data?

Yes. Settings > Data has a full DB backup and a CSV export. Both run on your device and write to a location you choose.

Why is the dashboard showing weird numbers?

Stealth Mode is probably on. When armed, every rupee amount in the app renders as ₹••••• and the dashboard shows believable decoy numbers. Unlock with biometric (or device PIN as fallback). Re-lock policy and screenshot-blocking are configurable in Settings.

Banks, cards, and the optimizer
Which banks are supported?

Ledgerly recognizes transaction SMS from HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Axis, Kotak, IndusInd, IDFC First, Yes Bank, Punjab National Bank, Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Federal Bank, RBL, Canara, Union Bank, DCB, AU Small Finance, Equitas, Indian Bank, Standard Chartered, Citi, American Express, and Deutsche Bank. If your bank is not on the list, its messages still come through under the raw sender ID, and you can teach Ledgerly the mapping in one tap, so an unlisted bank usually means a slightly uglier name, not a missed transaction.

Which credit cards does the catalog include?

67 cards at the time of writing, across HDFC (Regalia, Millennia, Diners), ICICI (Amazon Pay), SBI (Cashback, Prime), Axis (Magnus, Atlas, Ace), IndusInd (Tiger, Pinnacle), Standard Chartered (Smart), and others. The catalog is bundled with the app, not fetched at runtime, so it works offline. Updates ship in app releases.

How does the card optimizer know my reward rates?

From the bundled catalog. Each card carries its real per-category rates, monthly caps, exclusions, and FX markup, curated by hand and updated with the app.

Why did Ledgerly tag this transaction wrong?

Long-press the transaction to reclassify it. Categories learn: tagging a few transactions from a new merchant teaches the classifier. You can also rename the merchant, mark it as a subscription or a loan, or classify an inflow as a refund, reimbursement, gift, or borrowed money.

Troubleshooting
The order capture button disappeared. What happened?

Your phone’s battery saver likely froze the accessibility helper, this is common on Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo phones. Ledgerly detects it and posts a Restart notification, one tap brings it back. To stop it recurring, enable Autostart for Ledgerly and exempt it from battery optimization.

I got a refund. Why is it not showing as income?

Refunds are matched back to the original purchase and reduce that spend, deliberately. Counting refunds as income would inflate both sides of your ledger. You can adjust the match from the transaction’s long-press menu if Ledgerly paired it wrong.
